The 23-year-old has been included in the Switzerland squad alongside his brother Philipp, despite being uncapped. He played for FC Aarau in the 1999-2000 season before moving to FC Basel. Degen has won several honours with Christian Gross' side, including the Swiss and Alps Cups in 2003 and the domestic league titles in 2004 and 2005. He also starred in the Basel side that reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup this season before their dramatic exit to Middlesbrough. Degen also missed out on a third successive league title when Basel finished second behind FC Zurich on goal difference.
