Versatile defender Carlos Bocanegra has established himself as a regular starter for the USA after the disappointment of missing out on the 2002 World Cup finals. He made his senior international debut in 2001 and was part of the team that won the CONCACAF Gold Cup the following year, but did not make the cut for Korea/Japan 2002. However, his combination of strength, pace and aerial prowess has since persuaded coach Bruce Arena to make him a key member of the team. Equally at home at left-back or centre-back, Bocanegra made his name with Chicago Fire and twice won the MLS Defender of the Year award before joining Fulham in January 2004. However, he is yet to demonstrate his true ability in the Premiership.
